The Peter and Paul Fortress private tour №11352

Peter & Paul Fortress is an engineering masterpiece of the XVIII century. It was built back in 1704 by the founder of the city, Peter the Great. The fortress could repulse almost any attack, nevertheless its guns were put in use only in the days of October Revolution in 1917. That is why the outbuildings over 300 years of age remains so well preserved.

Shortly after the construction, the Peter & Paul fortress became the main Russian prison for political criminals. Moreover, during the Red Terror of the KGB it has become an execution place. You will get a chance to get inside that old prison cells. In the main church of the fortress, the Peter & Paul Cathedral, you will see the tombs of the Romanov dynasty emperors and members of family.
